Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the one year training on the attitude toward the mentally ill and the perception of the mental health problems of the mental health professional trainees. We also intended to evaluate the outcomes of the training in the aspect of the effects on the attitudes, and to propose future directions to revise the curriculum of the training course.

Methods: Study tool was self report questionnaires including general characteristics, 11-item severity of mental health problems, 14-item priority of mental health services, and 40-item CAMI scale. 143 mental health professional trainees(119 nurses, 24 social workers) answered the questionnaires in twice-at the beginning and at the end of the training. The data were compared with paired t-test.

Results: 1) The mental health professional trainees showed no change in the perception of the severity of the mental health problems at the end of the training, except for rise of ranking in severity of dementia from the 5th to the 2nd. 2) Need for ¡¯hospitalization facilities¡¯ and ¡¯family counseling or meeting¡¯ was decreased at the end of training. Vocational rehabilitation was perceived to be the most necessary services both at the beginning and at the end of training. 3) Trainees showed improvement in the attitudes of benevolence and social restrictiveness. But there was no change in other areas of CAMI-authoritarianism, community mental health ideology.

Conclusion: Training had positive effects on the attitudes of the trainees, especially on benevolence and social restrictiveness. We need to evaluate the factors affecting the changes in attitudes. It is necessary to revise the curriculum of the training course to improve attitudes of authoritarianism and community mental health ideology.
